As I've journeyed to find the life that is ours, I've made it my mission to help others do the same--helping moms to embrace a homeschool life uniquely their own.
As a military wife, you quickly learn to become a bit of this and a bit of that if you want to survive. And that is what you'll find here on my channel. You also learn quickly to embrace the life that is yours...because it in no way compares to civilian life!
With more than a decade of homeschooling behind us, I have learned a lot! I love to share what has (and what hasn't!) worked for us, embracing a homeschool life that is uniquely ours.
We have graduated one kiddo & transitioned her to a 4-year college. Another in high school, and the last in middle school.

Success with Literature-Based Curriculum: My Best Tips & Tricks
I hesitated far too long on using literature-based curriculum. I was afraid I couldn't manage it & I didn't know how to adapt it to our own homeschool. Now that I have several years of it under our belt...I can't believe I didn't start sooner! What have I learned? Let's chat.

1st Impressions of Homeschool Year #15
I love literature based learning, but I completely agree that it has to be limited in order to work for our family. I cannot do a literature based language arts, history and science. I have several children and it just becomes too much. Last year and this coming year I chose to do literature-based history and it's been great. This coming year I'm going to do a literature based science as well, but with only one main book as our spine. I may or may not get some additional library books to go with each topic. We also use audiobooks while we are driving a lot. I recently discovered that I could get hoopla through my library, download books to my phone and listen to them in the van. So excited about this option!
Very helpful tips 7:41
Awesome advice. We love literature based curriculum ❤
Great tips!!
What do you use to send the plans to your kids?
For that kiddo, Microsoft's OneNote is his planner of choice. So I added his plans to it, as well as any .pdfs he needed.
🎉🎉
I'd love to see a sample daily checklist for mom/ teacher
Oh, good idea! And that would force me to get my own list updated for this school year.🤣 I'll put it on my video idea list.
🤩
Great video… random question. Do you use a mic for your videos? I think the sound quality is very nice and I’m looking for a good, inexpensive one to use.
I use the Hollyland Lark M2. It was more than I set out to spend but I'm beyond thrilled with it. I tried two others. I wanted to love the PQRQP Wireless Lavalier but I didn't think the sound was much better. I really liked the HMKCH Wireless Lavalier. And I would have kept it but they have dishonest marketing, IMO. I got the 'get a free gift card from us after you leave a 5-star review' postcard. And I return every item that sends me one of those. The quality was good for the price...but that postcard earned them a return. Here are the links to all 3 (in that order): amzn.to/4c7AZvD amzn.to/3VLZ4SV amzn.to/3KMBUFZ I used to use this one. But once I changed phones & needed a wireless mic, that one became a pain. amzn.to/45sCCBJ
Bittersweet... Right there with you.😭💝😭
Thank you so much for making this video on Math curriculum reviews, it was very helpful!
Wonderful! I'm so glad.
I think you introduced me to Guest Hollow curriculum when you reviewed your daughter going through Chemistry in the Kitchen! So glad to have found them. We love the style of their units. Next year, my daughter is finally be doing Chemistry in the Kitchen next year!
🎉
I just purchased Boys in the Boat for my son to read over the summer then the next morning saw an email for 50% off the literary adventure unit for it so we finally dove in and bought one to try. I have been eyeing them for a while, but have never heard anyone talk about them. I am excited to hear you enjoyed it and how many side trails they include, we love those too! I am really looking forward to checking it out more bow for when we are ready to start it! I am going to check out Math Without Borders for my rising 8th grader! He gets sooooo annoyed if things take too long to explain. He understands math quickly and wants to get to it, but also likes a physical book to reference when needed. This might be a good fit for him, and one we havent checked out yet!
Oh, I hope you love Boys in the Boat. I listened to the adult version of the book several years ago. I can't believe how captivated I was by the story but I binged through it! If you haven't seen the movie yet, it is streaming now. The movie is fantastic, too. If Math Without Borders doesn't seem like a great fit, Mr. D is very concise, too. There's no textbook, though. We also have an old Jacob's Algebra book that is concise.
@@TheHomeschoolBreakroom he tried Mr D and for some reason he did not like it. My other son is thriving with it. So, we were glad Mr D had awesome customer service and was able to refund us for the course. He is going to preview some over the summer to see what might be a good fit!
Isn't it interesting how kids can be drawn to/against curriculum?! I'm always interested to see how different kids react to the same program. I'm glad to hear they have good CS. I've only dealt with them in regards to questions about problems or grades.
@@TheHomeschoolBreakroom it is so funny, especially because the kidso who is doing great with Mr D math is the one I was absolutely not sure would do ok without a physical book, explanations to go back to a read if needed etc. The one who didn't like it is the one I expected to do best with that format. Ha! They are always keeping me on my toes!
I am so glad to have found your page. I am a first generation homeschool mom, heading into our third year soon. I have all the writing strands curriculum books that were passed down to me, and my instinct tells me it will work, but it is so radically different from other curriculum. And then my goal is also to help my child enjoy reading, similar to yours, but have not met many or any other families on that same page. This is encouraging and affirming for so many reasons. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am subscribing and will be watching more from you! 🙏
The Writing Strand curriculum is a really solid program -- and I got it the same way! I really like how clearly each project is laid out. While we've never used it as our main curriculum, I think it's good for the right students. The homeschool community can be good about encouraging books/reading, but it can often be so fragmented on what kind of books kids "should" be reading. I'm just in the camp of "read what you enjoy and do it without guilt!"
I’m so touched by how you understand your sons’ learning processes and help just enough for them to succeed but, I imagine, to still feel independent ❤ We homeschool year round (my kids insist) and one of them is using Moving Beyond the Page. He enjoys it so much- well with the exception of the art/crafts aspect so we modify that. He uses CTC Math which he says he will ‘always’ use. He enjoys a lot of structure. My other son is a didactic learner so he forges his own path. Currently he’s fully immersed in the Spanish language and all his studies for other subjects are in Spanish - except for math which he uses Denison and CTC Math for. Oh and coding which so far is in English. He devours all things geography, history and cultures too. So both are enjoying this 7th grade year which will soon be 8th grade! Thanks again for your videos. They’re always extremely informative and helpful x
🎉
Sooo helpful! My oldest is 8th grade this coming year. I'm nervous but also excited for high school!
Do you have a video on how you put together your daily planner? Looks interesting. Would love to see how you set it all up when you get a chance. Love your channel! ❤
I am going to check out Literary Adventures as soon as this video is done.
Oh, I bet you'd like them! (And thanks for commenting about them, I forgot to add my link!) They run a sale every Wednesday off one book, 50% off I think. I was JUST thinking about your mama yesterday. How is she doing?
@@TheHomeschoolBreakroomI love how everything is set up for you. My mom is doing so good. She is responding to treatment well. She has 4 more treatments to go.
Oh, that's wonderful!
My kid did RSO Bio this year as well; we still have the rotting banana on the counter, as a matter of fact. Ha! Thank you for the wealth of knowledge you share with us.
Ha! Matthew loved that one. When we went on vacation, I accidentally left a small baggie of pineapple on the counter. It was puffed up and, before we had finished unloading the car, he was measuring the bag. 🤣🤦🏻♀️
We did RSO Biology 2 this year as well! However, we did save anatomy for this year and plan to combine it with health. My kiddo likes structure and autonomy, too. Too bad about the online class not being available next year. :(
Saving the health portion is a great idea! We used this one on Outschool. The teacher, Alison, used to teach this class directly for the publisher of RSO before they closed down their online classes. outschool.com/classes/biology-2-full-year-course-with-labs-semester-2-sC1mGVZV?sectionUid=994a11fe-4802-4b4d-b82a-567babde1c4d&showDetails=true&usid=EMdNOp3j&signup=true&
Thank you for this information. My oldest is finishing 9th grade so it's a perfect time for me to begin these things.
High school is such a wild ride! They seem so OLD when they start it. And then, when they're graduating, you realize they were really just babies. <3
Love this AND a video on apps/ things to do when sending kiddo away for college…not a tech mom but feel her love of tacos, milk and yarn may need to supplemented..she’s not wanting to take car first year
Oh, things to do before college would be a good one. I didn't realize she was going to head off to college after all! Wow. <3 Congrats on graduating your baby. You've done well, mama.
@@TheHomeschoolBreakroom yes…it’s unconventional but a God thing for sure. Would love to see what apps we should put in her phone, etc that would facilitate her…she doesn’t want car first year
I'm working on a video about things like that!
Unbelievably helpful. Thanks for your generosity in sharing x
I'm so glad you found it useful!
Thank you for sharing! This is very helpful.
You have one in high school? Or heading into it?
@@TheHomeschoolBreakroom my oldest is entering 9th grade!
Fun! High school withy first was such a fun ew adventure. It felt like we were starting homeschool all over again
@TheHomeschoolBreakroom Joy! Lol. Just kidding. We are excited.
@@Homeschoolology Oh, but I meant it in all the best ways. That excited feeling of embarking on something new? Discovering new curriculum & resources? Watching them bloom in all new ways? <3 (But with the benefit of lots of experience under your belt!)
Thanks for this, Tricia. I have a rising 9th grader, and this is the first year I feel panicked about schooling! Like suddenly everything matters… I see you have a template by subject. My daughter’s taken high school level ELA and science this year, and alg 1 and geometry in 7th and 8th. Would it be kosher to just list those by subject, without saying the year, so that she’d only need to do 2 more years of science and math in high school? (She’s good at science and math, but not a STEM oriented kid.) It’s kind of fudging, since they’d assume the classes were done in high school, but I’d love for her to have more time before college to volunteer and pursue her passions,
That's exactly why I have an option by subject or by year. And it's definitely not fudging -- those are high school level courses! Now, for my daughter, she ended up with enough math credits (even without algebra 1), so I just left algebra 1 off her by-year transcripts. A couple of colleges wanted it broken down by year (rather than by subject). If she can take algebra 2, obviously she's done algebra 1. But, even by year, some families will just include it in a separate 'earned prior to high school' column. Definitely make time for her to be a well-rounded student/individual. <3 (PS -- High school was the first time I ever panicked, too! I was so confident & comfortable with our choices prior but high school just felt like SO MUCH.)
@@TheHomeschoolBreakroom Thanks so much, this (like all your videos!) has been so helpful to me. ❤
Great video to help remember all those little details! We're going through this process now. Contrary to popular wisdom, our university of choice wanted a copy of the diploma rather than a copy of the transcript. I found it is quite easy (and 100% legal and legitimate) to make your own on Canva. You don't need to pay a service to do this for you - unless you want to. It took me about 1/2 hour - and I'd never used Canva before. (as for transcripts, some places want them notarized within 10 days of submission - no notarizing in advance may not be helpful).
I NEVER thought to make one in Canva! Genius. I'm not sure I've ever heard of a school wanting the diploma over a transcript. Interesting! It would be so much easier if colleges standardized what they want from homeschoolers!! If they can do it for public & private high schools, surely they can figure it out for us.
We're way behind. We had my oldest move out, then she got married, we care forvmy mother-in-law & had to move her. I've the most stressful year of my life & I feel rotten that my poor daughter is behind. And everytime I think we are starting the week off right something else happens. And the only hope I have is that God knows my circumstances & He knows why I have to homeschool. But I still feel like we're going to do school through summer and it just stinks.
Oh, Lori. First, congrats to your daughter. <3 Second, it sounds like it's been a hard year. I don't know your daughter's age but, if she isn't in high school yet, I would definitely scale back what you "need" to do still. I wouldn't cut back on math but, honetly, most other subjects are pretty easy to scale back on. Rest is important, too, this summer. <3
Also…what do we mamas do after we graduated them???????????
I feel like this is one of those questions I need to explore...but I'm not there yet!
I’m a blubbery mess!! Senior mom here, last one too…need a video soon or I’ll have eatin way too much chocolate and used too much Kleenex
You made me laugh & tear up!
How did Elizabeth know how to “take notes” in college..are the professors showing them, do they use laptops or write
Good question & I wish I had an answer for you. We tried various ways in high school & I failed to do it well. Looking back, I think part of the problem was simply lack of a need to figure it out. When she took classes at the community college, she did figure out a way that worked for her. Most students at the CC & her university take a laptop to class. She also has an ipad which she finds easier to take notes on sometimes, especially if the professor hands out a .pdf of the slides.
We are reading The Borrowers and The Golden Bull. Loving both of them so far
The Golden Bull looks interesting! While it's a little below my boys' level, I think it'd make a great summer read for us. I'll put it on the list.
Oh T ❤ I just really needed to hear this. Thank you for sharing. And for sharing family pics. Gosh, it felt like hearing from a close friend ❤
Oh, Melissa. <3 Parenting teens, as you know, has it's challenges and it's upsides.
Thanks for sharing!
Love this list as I get closer and closer to high school with my oldest
High school is such an awesome time to homeschool -- it's my favorite!
Good list! I’d also add pretty Post-It flags for marking textbook pages they’ve highlighted or annotated. One good find for us recently was the Nebo app (iPad) which my teen uses to transform handwriting to text. She types well, but says writing fiction flows more organically when written. Also she likes learning through magazine subscriptions, she gets excited when they come in, and she’s learned so much science, as well as current events, which we can then discuss. It’s good to hear you like Grammarly! My daughter was getting annoyed with it so uninstalled (she writes a lot of fiction, with a looser conversational style), but I’ll ask her to try it on essays.
Grammarly used to have an option where you could set how formal you wanted to aim for, etc. which made it a fantastic option for conversational writing. I'm sad they took it away. I've never heard of Nebo, thank you for the idea! And, yes, Post-it flags are amazing. We found transparent ones this year which are really handy for tracing maps & images, both of which Matthew needed this year for cartography & biology. Have you tried Oyla and/or The Week Junior magazines? They are two favorites around here and right in line with her interests.
@@TheHomeschoolBreakroom Yes! Those are actually the two we subscribe to! (Along with her niche interest, Cat Fancy 😆) They’re excellent, I sometimes read them too!
I may be overlooking the link for the used curriculum store, can you point me in the right direction to find it x thank you
You aren't overlooking it, I forgot to include it! It's called The Homeschool Gathering Place. You can't shop via their website (unfortunately!) but you can call them & they'll look for whatever you're searching for. 919-571-8106 homeschoolgatheringplace.com/
I like the high school focus here. We can always use more high school content. Thanks for joining us in this collab. 🌻
Thanks for hosting it.
Libraries are so amazing!! New subscribers here from the collab! 😊
Oh, i never heard of that out of town resident library card. Im definitely going to check that one out. Thanks for sharing, Trisha!
I love your T-shirt.
Thanks! Walmart! I smiled when I saw it last week -- with the temps here in NC this week, it felt like summer! (You're in NC, too, aren't. you?)
Confession, we love our protractor and some graph paper. But we are giant math nerds;).
ditto! But I wouldn’t call it nostalgia. My mini whiteboard with graphing on one side is a huge favorite!
Libraries are such a great resource these days!
They really are! When we lived in Indiana, our library had passes you could check out for the children's museum & the zoo. I loved that offering. So many are really broadening their ideas of what to offer. I love the idea of them becoming more of a community 'hub'.
Good to hear your thoughts on Grammarly. I've been debating on that one.
Since it's free, it's easy to give it a whirl & delete if you hate it. Sometimes I have to 'dismiss' the same suggestions a few times before it stops which is annoying. But, mostly, we do love it.
